Bathing baby can be an intimidating undertaking. But with a bit of preparation and a few handy tips, you’ll be running like a well-oiled lean, mean baby-cleaning machine in no-time.

Like a sponge
Until baby’s umbilical cord stump falls off, a sponge bath is all she needs. Usually by 1 to 3 weeks, your newbie will be ready for a regular bath.

Occasional occasion
Your wee one doesn’t need to bathe every day; in fact, doing so could dry out her sensitive skin. It’s OK to go a few days between washes, just make sure to wipe baby’s face and bottom well in the interim.

The water’s fine
Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid scalding baby, and aim for a bath temperature between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. You can pour cupfuls of water over her tiny body throughout the bath to ensure she stays warm and comfortable.

Hands on
Babies can drown in less than an inch of water, so keep a hand on your tot at all times and never leave her unattended. Gather everything you’ll need (think washcloth, baby shampoo, hooded towel, etc.) before dipping baby in the tub.

Nooks and crannies
Use a washcloth to thoroughly clean your little one’s skin folds, where milk and lint are often trapped. You’ll also want to dry these areas well postbath to prevent chafing and rashes.
