I must start by saying that the Svan Baby-to-Booster Bentwood High Chair is very attractive. I am starting my review on this point because so many of the child seats out there are made of plastic and have a really different style. If you are looking for something a little more elegant to match the decor of a particular room, go no further. Now, on to the rest of the review …
B2BFullshot.jpegThe chair came disassembled and required about 20-30 minutes to put together. There was nothing too difficult. When the chair was fully assembled, I was impressed by its sleekness and compact size. This isn’t a chair that is going to take up a lot of space in your kitchen or living area. It also folds up to a smaller size, making it great for smaller areas or putting the chair away between uses.
The function of the chair is pretty straightforward. It has built-in harness straps that are great for keeping your little one secure in the chair. The tray slides on and off easily (it can be operated with one hand) and secures well to the chair. There is a frame on the chair (Svan calls it the “crotch bar”) that the tray attaches to and the child’s legs slide into. My one complaint with the function of the chair is that this frame creates a pretty small area to slide the child into. It is fine once our son is in, but it is a little challenging to maneuver. The tray itself is sleek and easy to wipe down. It is on the smaller side, but it matches the proportions of the chair itself very well.
The chair can be converted into a booster seat for older kids. I really like this feature. The conversion is easy—just remove the “crotch bar” and, if desired, the harness straps. The chair is equipped with a step that can be easily adjusted up and down to help a kid get in and out by himself. A great feature! Our son isn’t ready for a booster seat yet, but I think I’ll love this chair even more for this function. It will be great to have a nice looking chair that allows him to sit at the table with us!
We had a little trouble with the height of the chair because we have a high dinner table. The chair would fit a standard height table well, but keep this in mind if you are looking for a booster seat and have a high table like us. The chair can’t be adjusted up or down.
I should also note that the chair comes with pre-applied felt pads on the legs—an awesome feature to protect our hardwood floors. It was so nice to have these come standard on the chair!
svan-highchairs-copyOne last feature to mention is the seat padding. The seat cushion fits neatly into the chair. The back cushion is attached by two velcro patches. The velcro works ok to keep the cushion in place, but it is pretty easy for our son to pull off (which he likes to do). This could easily be reinforced with strong adhesives. The cushions also allow crumbs to fall between them, but cleaning is easy since the cushions can quickly be removed and reinserted.
Overall, we are very happy with the Svan Baby-to-Booster Bentwood High Chair. We like having a chair that looks good and will provide function all the way up to a booster seat! The chair is a little pricey, but so is good-looking furniture. And this chair is good-looking furniture!
