Like most newborns, my 6-week-old daughter wanted to be with me … all the time. When I tried putting her down in her crib or play yard, she always woke up immediately and started crying. Once I finally got her to sleep, the fear of SIDS crept in, and I found myself checking on her constantly. A few hours later, she awoke, and we started the process all over again. All I wanted to do was bring her into bed with me, but I was so exhausted that I feared it wasn’t safe. Then I found the By Your Side Sleeper by Summer Infant. In it she can see me, smell me, hear me, and I can easily reach and pat her when she begins to fuss in the night. At last she is happy, and I can finally get some sleep.
The By Your Side Sleeper is a co-sleeping device that goes in the bed with you. The sleeper has a sturdy metal frame, so you won’t roll over on it. The sides are mesh, so you can see baby from your pillow. It has a removable mattress pad and includes a fitted sheet. The sleeper frame and pad can be cleaned easily with a damp cloth, and the sheet is machine washable. It comes with clear instructions, though the assembly is fairly intuitive. It just unfolds and snaps together. It is gray and white with a geometric patterned sheet. The frame is metal but padded.

The sleeper is ideal for travel. It folds up to be the size of a large purse and even has a handle. (You might even be able to fit it in your carry-on bag!) It is much lighter and smaller than any pack ’n play, and because it goes in the bed with you, it won’t take up space in small room.
There are a few things you may want to consider before buying. This product is only recommended for babies 0-3 months old with a maximum weight limit of 15 pounds, so your baby won’t be in it for very long. Also, it does take up quite a bit of bed space. My husband and I share a king sized bed and were comfortable, but I could see how you might feel cramped if you share a much smaller bed.

Overall, this sleeper is ideal for getting through the first few months of sleep with your newborn. Plus, it is very affordable! If you’re struggling to get enough sleep (aren’t all parents of newborns?) and you’re open to sharing a bed with your babe, I’d definitely recommend the By Your Side Sleeper.
