CabonMonoxideSeptember is National Safety Month, and it’s the perfect time to brush up on a few simple ways you can protect the ones you love:
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check those smoke detectors! Replace old batteries to ensure they are in working order and be aware of carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a byproduct from generators, lawn mowers, gas range stoves and car engines and, because it’s odorless, can be extremely deadly. On average, 170 people die each year in the United States from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Lead paint. If your house, apartment, daycare or even school was constructed before 1978, there still may be lead paint present on the walls, windows and doors. Have it tested by a lead professional to avoid the toxic consequences that target your child’s brain and nervous system.
Car seats. Car accidents are the leading killer of children from ages 1 to 12. Find a car seat compatible with the weight and age of your child, and keep the seat rear-facing for as long as possible to maximize safety.
Baby CPR. Take a couple hours out of your day to enroll in an infant CPR course so you’ll know what to do should the unthinkable happen. To find a class near you, visit redcross.org.
