Being hands-free is a huge luxury when you have a new baby, but it’s great to take advantage of when you can swing it. Strollers aren’t always a practical solution (in the case of shorter trips, cramped areas, etc.), so having a baby carrier is a must. Fortunately, we were asked to review the Active Baby Carrier by Baby K’tan, a wrap-style carrier in a unique high-tech performance fabric.
The process of putting on the wrap and carrying baby isn’t nearly as complicated as I would have thought. (Initially, I caught myself staring at the box and wishing I had paid attention more when I was a Boy Scout, ha! Thankfully, there are no complicated knots required.) I was able to put on the wrap and place baby in several positions on my own. It is much easier to do so with a partner, however, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. A great feature is the built-in back support band, which is essentially a second loop that provides additional support and security. I have chronic “old man” back after standing too long, but holding our 13-pound nugget didn’t create any strain. Baby seemed to enjoy the wrap more than our soft-structured carrier, which doesn’t offer as many positions. (Our baby preferred the swaddle-like position of the Baby K’tan).
The wrap itself is made of what I would describe as a wicking material, which will be especially convenient in the hot summer months for keeping baby (and parent) cool. It blocks over 90 percent of UVA and UVB rays, which is great if you are going to use the wrap at a ball game or an amusement park where you will be exposed to the sun for an extended period of time. It folds up and can fit in our diaper bag easily—ideal for when you are on the go.
Carrying a 3-month-old baby around can get tiring, but the wrap definitely helps alleviate that. It can hold infants and toddlers in multiple positions from 8-35 pounds, but I’m not sure we would use it past the 20-25 pound mark for an extended period of time because of potential “sagging” problems. The carrier is very soft, and it does seem to put the baby to sleep, allowing us to get things done around the house and keep baby nearby. For new parents with a 0-4-month-old baby, I would definitely recommend it. It can easily mimic the womb and swaddle positions that a new baby will enjoy.
My main (and really only) complaint with the Baby K’tan is that it’s not one size fits all. My wife and are drastically different in the size department (I’m 6’2; she’s 5’2). If you and your significant other plan on both using the carrier and do not have a similar build, you will need to buy different sizes. This isn’t the case with some other carriers we’ve used. (Fortunately, at $60, the Baby K’tan is less expensive than many other carriers, so buying two may not be entirely unreasonable.) On the plus side, a sized carrier means there is no adjusting of straps or buckles.
The Baby K’tan Active Carrier is a convenient, durable and stylish carrier that is great for new parents, especially those expecting in the summer months. The material is soft and breathable, and the instructions are simple and easy to follow and replicate. I think that covers everything, so I’m going to go ahead and say it: That’s a wrap!
