If you are exploring parenthood (or already in the thick of it), you’re probably no stranger to the Frida brand. Their first product, the game-changing FridaNose Snot Sucker, was launched in the mid-2000s and is now a staple on almost every baby registry. Since then, Frida has released dozens of products for babies and new parents. Earlier this month, the brand expanded into a new demographic—families preparing or actively trying to conceive.

The Frida Fertility product line was developed by medical and fertility specialists and includes pre-conception supplements for people born with female reproductive organs as well as for people who were born with male reproductive organs, ovulation and pregnancy tests, and insemination set. Pricing ranges from $10 for the early-detection pregnancy tests to $50 for the insemination set.

While Frida’s reputation alone might make you feel confident in the quality and efficacy of its products, it can be hard to know what makes its fertility line stand out from others. We spoke with Stephanie M. Thompson, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science in New Jersey, who gave us a little insight into why Frida Fertility is different.

Q: What are the key ingredients in the pre-conception supplements that help fertility, and what are their functions?

A: Frida Fertility’s pre-conception supplements contain several supplements ideal for supporting fertility for both men and women.

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that your body naturally produces and that declines with age. Because the development of both eggs and sperm requires a lot of energy, antioxidants can help to decrease the oxidation that happens with age. Coenzyme Q10 can help improve egg and embryo quality for women of all ages.

Selenium is another antioxidant that functions to help protect the egg as well as hormone production. Inositol (or Myo inositol) is a sugar molecule that helps with insulin regulation and cell signaling. This is especially helpful for people with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who struggle with insulin resistance and irregular menstrual cycles. And of course, folate is a key ingredient to have on board to prevent neural tube defects in the fetus.

Q: What makes Frida’s ovulation tracking products different from competitors?

A: Frida’s ovulation tracking products are accurate and simple to use, and their unique design sets them apart from the competitors. Instead of using a separate notebook or piece of paper to record daily results, the tracker card keeps all of your information organized and easy to share with your doctor. The unique shape of the “pee cup” is genius, in my opinion; it’s easy to collect and test your urine daily without making a mess. Tracking ovulation can be awkward, but the Frida Fertility kit makes it as effortless as possible.

Q: How does the insemination set help? Does it have any special features that can improve a person’s chances of getting pregnant?

A: The Frida Fertility insemination set is designed to collect sperm and then quickly deposit it in the vagina close to the cervix to help optimize the chances of pregnancy. The ease of use, like with all of Frida’s products, can help improve the chances of pregnancy as the cup allows for maximal sperm collection, and the syringe helps to efficiently get the sperm as close to the cervix as possible. Its design is as familiar as a tampon, so people who have periods and are familiar with tampons may be comfortable doing the sperm insemination process on their own.

Another amazing benefit of the Frida insemination kit is access and affordability for couples who may not have the resources available for formal fertility treatment (which can cost anywhere from $300 to $1000 on average). We also underestimate the difficulty that some couples may have in timing intercourse, and the anxiety and pressure that trying to conceive may cause. The insemination kit helps to decrease anxiety if intercourse is not possible, as the opportunity for conception that month will not be lost.
