5 Mom-Owned Brands to Shop this Small Business Saturday

By Published On: November 24th, 2021

In the United States, 31 percent of business owners are female—and 1 out of 3 of those are estimated to be mothers. That translates to roughly 4 million mom-owned businesses nationwide. Impressive, right? But so often, mom-owned businesses don’t get the same funding to fuel their growth as their male counterparts—and those stats are even worse for BIPOC women in business. And let’s be real: Do we ever ask men if they are working dads? Nope.

So this year as the shopping holiday approaches, let’s support some badass moms and their brands, shall we?

Happy Mango

When music industry maven Phnewfula Frederiksen became a mother, she had a hard time finding sustainable baby products that met her standards. Knowing moms and babies deserved more, she founded Happy Mango, an Atlanta-based eco-friendly baby, pregnancy, and kids boutique. Her brick-and-mortar and online stores offer eco-friendly versions of all the things moms need for pregnancy up to about 6 years old. Carrying everything from the new UPPAbaby jogging stroller to a pregnancy subscription box, it’s the place to shop for all your sustainable new-mama needs. We love this mom-of-two’s exquisite taste and high-standard for safety, not to mention her avid support of other Black-owned and minority-owned businesses. Frederiksen has made it her mission to support moms—even allowing her mama employees to bring their babies to work until they are 6 months old so they can nurse on demand. Larken

Cofounders Katie Blouin and Maggie Phipps launched Larken in 2019 after struggling to find an easy and comfortable way to both nurse and pump while breastfeeding their own daughters. Enter the Larken X—the all-in-one nursing and hands-free pumping bra that skips the harsh wiring and hardware. It’s silky smooth, stretchy and grows with your growing girls, so it can be worn through all stages without sacrificing support. It’s soft (like really soft) and a must-have for any expectant or postpartum mama.

Kiss Kiss Goodnight

Kiss Kiss Goodnight’s goal is to help little ones develop healthy, resilient skin through innovative, microbiome-friendly skincare. Founded by Shelly Ann Winokur, chemical engineer and mama of four, this nourishing brand is formulated for anyone with sensitive skin, from babies to grown-ups. Made with evidence-based, sustainable ingredients, this line is made to be effective and make you feel good about what you’re putting on your babe’s (and family’s!) skin. Check out the discovery kit for babies and the midnight rainbow jellies for older kiddos.

Modern Mom Style Box

The pandemic rendered so many of us worthless when it comes to assembling an outfit that doesn’t involve elastic. If you’re daring enough to drop the athleisure and put on some clothes without commitment, this might be just your fit. Modern Mom Style Box is a clothing rental service created exclusively for moms and moms-to-be by Tara Clark, creator of the parenting and lifestyle brand Modern Mom Probs. In addition to pulling us out of our style slumps, Clark is a fierce advocate for maternal mental health awareness. Dressed up, down, tops to bottoms—rent endless looks for $60/month.

MiliMili

The world of baby sleep gear can be, well … sleepy. Luckily MiliMili is anything but a snore. This vibrant mom-and-baby brand started with just one handmade wearable blanket intended as a gift. And a gift indeed—that very piece inspired the birth of a whole brand. Cofounders Rose Bridges and Kelsey Searles create safe, soft, breathable, and bold wearable blankets, women’s sleep rompers, crib sheets, sleep masks and more. Only a mom could come up with something so full of life.

We know this list just barely scratches the surface of the incredible mom-owned brands out there … which is why we want to hear from you!
