Fuss-free

Colic is severe, often fluctuating pain in the stomach caused by intestinal gas. Unlike normal crying, colic can last for extended periods of time and continue despite a mama’s best efforts. It’s usually defined by the rule of 3s: Unexplained crying for more than three hours a day, at least three days per week for three weeks or more. Yep, that’s a lot of crying. If you think you may be dealing with colic, here are a few tips for easing its effects and calming your infant.

1| Keep things moving. Think back to when your baby was in the womb experiencing the many different motions of day-to-day activities. Movement, like rocking, can provide quick comfort, so try cradling your wee one in different positions (an upright stance is often preferred), use a baby wrap, take a walk in the stroller or try putting her in a baby swing.

2| Pay attention to eating habits. With colic, it can be hard to tell when your child is hungry and identify the signals for why she’s crying. To better gauge her needs, keep your baby awake while she eats. This will help facilitate a full feeding as opposed to grazing, which can cause an infant to not be completely full or hungry at any particular time. Interrupted, small meals can throw off feeding schedules (which can also bleed into sleep quality) and contribute to fussiness.

3| Try using a probiotic. Healthy digestion is an important factor when treating colic, as an excess of gas will cause further irritation. A balanced gut (also known as the gut flora) assists in the digestion of milk and solids, regular bowel movements and a strong lining of the gut. Research suggests that infants suffering from colic appear to have an imbalance in the gut flora with fewer levels of beneficial bacteria, which can lead to digestive symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, flatulence and cramping.

To help ensure your infant’s digestive system works efficiently, and to reduce the risk of pain and discomfort, introduce Bio-Kult Infantis to their diet. This advanced multi-strain probiotic formula (good for babies, toddlers and young children) contains seven probiotic strains, vitamin D3 to contribute to normal immune system function, Preplex, DHA and EPA (both rich in omega-3 fatty acids). It’s non-GMO and gluten free, and it is void of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. It’s easy to use and doesn’t have to be refrigerated, so make sure to stock the pantry for more days with a happier baby. (PS: Bio-Kult is great for all babies, not solely for those with tummy troubles!)

4| Enlist the help of a pacifier. Sucking is a self-soothing mechanism for many infants. A pacifier (or a knuckle or finger) may bring welcomed relief to the whole family. Keep plenty stashed throughout the house for whenever crying ensues. A pacifier can also be a substitute for your breast, so baby won’t get into the habit of falling asleep while nursing.
