Black-Owned Baby Products to Shop During Black History Month–and Beyond

By Published On: February 20th, 2023

We've rounded up 11 of our favorite baby goods from Black-owned businesses.

It’s Black History Month, and although we should support minority-owned businesses at all times, there’s a special call to action in February. The annual celebration initially began as Negro History Week back in 1926, a conduit of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), originally founded in 1915 as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History by historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland. The ASALH was formed to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans and Africans, and soon garnered nationwide appeal with many across the country following their lead.

Several decades later during the Civil Rights Movement, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month among many Black people. In 1976, it was nationally recognized by President Gerald Ford, and ever since all sitting Commanders in Chief have followed suit.

Here at Pregnancy & Newborn, we are delighted to honor the history of Black Americans, and celebrate our diversity by sharing some fantastic baby products developed by Black-owned businesses. Purchasing one of these items will not only be great for you and your baby, but will also support the companies that work hard to produce quality items for your little one—not just in February, but every month during the year!

Whimsical Washcloths

Think adorable stuffed animal that doubles as a bath sponge, and you’ve encapsulated what these cute little tubby-time companions are. Each of these SoapSox friends has a compartment to “feed it” liquid or bar soap, and when added to water, lathers up nicely, resulting in—dare we say—an enjoyable bathtime experience. These cuddly cuties come in various characters, including kiddie favorites like Baby Shark and Paw Patrol. From $12

Snuggle Blanket

What baby wouldn’t love to cuddle up in a soft, cozy blankie? As a parent, you’re sure to love one that is also a healthy choice for your family. Each snuggle blanket by Stina & Mae is 100% organic cotton and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified. Choose from three different patterns: Safari Life, Mudcloth, or our bright and fun selection here: Over the Rainbow. $32

Pretty Practical Plate

As your baby grows, they’ll need functional tableware to help make mealtime easy (and so will you). The Pretty Please Teethers (PPT) Silicone Divider Plate is a BPA- and chemical-free option that comes with four removable triangular dividers. Parents can use the 100% silicone plate for their baby’s food or settle varying knickknacks charcuterie style into each compartment. They’re also dishwasher, freezer, and microwave-safe. Ages 6 months and up; $30

Fashionable Booties

Can you even stand the cuteness? Sure, your baby isn’t walking yet, but they’ll still need shoes to keep their feet warm. These Tippy Tot baby crib shoes come in a variety of styles and colors, including emerald green, with lightweight patent leather and velvet laces (pictured here). Tippy Tot stands by their claim of providing high-quality shoes that are comfortable and supportive. Sizes 3 to 9 months; from $75

Decorative Crib Quilt

Your baby can dream of being a ballerina or an astronaut (hey, it’s never too early!) when they lay their head down on the vivid artwork of these Little Muffincakes Crib Quilts. The exterior is made from super soft 97% Bamboo Rayon and 3% Spandex, while the interior is 100% polyester. These adorable quilts measure 36 inches x 47 inches, making them a great option for supervised tummy time, or as an addition to your tot’s toddler bed after age 1. Just remember that if used for crib decoration, it must be removed before naps or bedtime. To reduce the risk of SIDS, follow the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on safe sleep and crib bedding. $80

Gentle Body Lotion

There are few things more sensitive than a baby’s skin, and as parents, we want to know that we’re using products that won’t harm their delicate exterior. This Lemon Lavender Body Lotion by Alaffia was created without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, mineral oil, artificial color, or synthetic fragrance. The lotion smells great and is good for sensitive skin types. $10

Breast Milk Boxes

Here’s a cute way to store your coveted breast milk (or should we say liquid gold), and unlike some of the standard containers on the market, this one will fit nicely among the containers you already have in your fridge. The Junobie Liquid Gold Breastmilk Box is made from food-grade silicone, comes with a carrying strap, and is freezer-safe. They also come in plenty of cute colors and can hold up to 20 ounces per container. $36 for two

Milestone Cards

It all goes by so fast, doesn’t it? Proudly Baby Milestone Cards are a great way to track how quickly your baby reaches key life moments. Included on the other side are thoughtful affirmations that will help you introduce self-love right from the beginning. $18

Teething Mitten

The Yummy Mitt Teething Mitten by Darlyng & Co. is easy for your babe to hold while soothing their gums as teeth are about to erupt. The brand created this mitt with multiple texture patterns that serve your baby’s sensory needs, and they come in three adorable styles: Isabella the Unicorn, Sophie the Kitten, and Yummy Buddy Bear (pictured). Ages 3 to 8 months; $13

Artful Diapers

Parents far and wide understand the importance of a diaper that is blowout- and leak-proof. Throw in some extra brownie points for TinkyPoo diapers because they give 12 hours of protection, aren’t made with harmful chemicals, and come in a variety of styles like “Space Traveler” (pictured). They’re so darn cute that they almost make stank-y diapers bearable—almost. Sizes 1 to 4; $14
