I have always heard great things about Ameda pumps, so I was excited to try out the latest: the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra Double Electric Breast Pump. And it didn’t disappoint!

Initial setup:

Although it initially seemed like there were too many small parts to keep track of, getting ready to pump was not as complicated as I thought it would be. I had to boil all parts to sterilize them, let them dry, hook up a few small pieces, and I was ready to go.

Ease of use:

When I first opened the box, I wasn’t sure why it came with so many flanges. But that’s a great feature about this pump—it comes with three different-sized flanges to custom fit different breast and nipple sizes (and if none of these fit, more sizes are available from Ameda). As all nursing moms know, breast size can change from day to day! Once I figured out which size worked best, the rest was easy. I simply hooked the flange to the bottle, plugged it into the pump, and turned it on.

Effectiveness:

The instruction manual for the pump gives excellent pointers about how to use the speed and suction controls in order to make the pump most efficient. I like having the control to change the speed and amount of suction separately, although I would like the suction to go a little faster in the beginning in order to achieve letdown quicker.

Cleaning:

This pump is easy to clean, and here’s the best part: all pieces can be placed in the dishwasher!

Portability:

The Purely Yours Ultra is extremely travel-friendly! It comes with many parts, but not all are needed for each pumping, so carrying it is not a burden. It can be powered with an AC adapter, batteries or a car adapter (sold separately)—making it convenient no matter where you are. The pump also comes with a cooler and six bottles and caps for storing milk, although I wish it also came with nipples that fit the caps to make feeding even more convenient. (I simply switch the milk from the storage containers to regular bottles for feeding.) Best of all, it comes with a very stylish, high quality carrying bag that can double as a diaper bag.

Overall:

It works extremely well and is easy to use. Overall, the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra Double Electric Breast Pump is an effective, superior product, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to invest in a good pump. So long to my old manual pump!
