We’re confident that all of you mamas and moms-to-be already understand the importance of reproductive health, but since September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, there’s no better time to remind everyone (including ourselves!) how important it is to be in tune with your body and pay attention to all symptoms you experience.
Gynecologic cancer is a term used to describe all cancer related to the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine, vulvar, cervical and vaginal cancer. Early detection is vital, but unfortunately, this type of cancer often remains undiagnosed until it has already spread to other parts of the body. This is largely due to the vague symptoms associated with gynecologic cancer.
For instance, signs of ovarian cancer can include bloating, pelvic pain and fatigue, but these are also common PMS symptoms. It may sound confusing, but the most important thing you can do is pay attention to your body—and stay on top of your OB/GYN appointments, of course! If any of your familiar symptoms suddenly seem exaggerated, or if they now appear in conjunction with other issues, talk to your healthcare provider about possible cancer screenings.
Tip: To learn more about the signs, symptoms and treatments associated with each type of gynecologic cancer, check out this helpful info from the CDC!
