Some say that the nasty chemicals formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) still found in some polishes are not safe for anyone, especially if you bite your nails and ingest a small amount. Others say that polish on your nails shouldn’t cause much worry during pregnancy—and the extra pampering can make you feel good about yourself.
The fumes at the salon might be another matter, though, especially if you have acrylic nails and you’re spending a lot of time in the salon breathing in the fumes. Even if the strong scents don’t trigger an attack of morning sickness, the vapors can make you feel a little light-headed. Tell your manicurist you are pregnant and ask for a mask like she wears to keep from inhaling the nasty smells. If you don’t want to go for the Michael Jackson masked look or if you do your own nails at home, make sure you are in a well-ventilated, open area and that you’re not exposed to the fumes for a long period of time.
Look for nail lacquers that are toluene, DBP and formaldehyde-free like Sally Hansen, Avon, newer hues from OPI and our favorite brand: Zoya. It stays put and comes in great colors. And if you’re still not feeling sure about polish, just skip it and ask for your nails to be buffed to a high polish for a natural shine. There’s no chipping to worry about and the natural look is super easy to maintain.
