As first-time parents, we were overwhelmed by the number of options there are for various baby gear items. We were more than excited when given the opportunity to review one of the latest infant car seats on the market: the Graco SnugRide Click Connect 40. We knew from our internet searches (and by word of mouth) that Graco makes quality products in regards to safety seats and were anxious to see whether the advancements made to the new Click Connect 40 version were worthy of the Graco reputation.
Upon its arrival, we were immediately pleased with the car seat’s overall appearance. The pattern is flattering and simple, and best of all, able to camouflage any stains, etc. Our particular pattern is a beautiful combination of taupe, brown and pink, however the seat is offered in another more gender neutral color scheme as well. The fabric can be wiped clean, and the infant support pad is also removable and machine washable (which any new mom would agree is a big plus). The canopy has significantly more coverage than any other infant seat we experienced and has a nice peek-a-boo window for checking in on the baby. The seat is compatible with a stroller caddy, a larger more full size stroller, and even a swing frame, making it easy to transition from store to car to house with a sleeping infant.
The rear-facing only seat is designed to carry babies as small as 4 pounds and as large as 40 pounds, and the removable support pads make this adjustment in growth possible. We have found that our newborn fits very snugly in the seat using the included infant support padding, while removing the infant insert made room nicely for our toddler-aged nephew. The seat itself has a wide handle, which makes carrying our baby while in the seat more comfortable. The weight of the seat on its own is just over 9 pounds—a bit lighter than some other seats we have tested, though not the lightest. The simple one-click in and one-click out of the base makes maneuvering very easy. We used the manual to install the base in the car itself and felt that the installation was fairly intuitive. When referencing the manual was necessary, the clear illustrations along with instructions were helpful for new parents like us.
As mentioned, a key feature of the Click Connect 40 is its ability to accommodate a child up to 2 years of age (up to 40 pounds). Children are still required to be rear-facing up until this age, and most infant car seats may only accommodate a child up to about 30 to 35 pounds. Additionally many of these children, even when meeting weight requirements, may grow too tall for the typical infant seat to accommodate. The Click Connect 40, however, has an adjustable base that can recline in eight different positions, with a footrest that can be pulled out and extended for the taller toddler. We found that our almost 2-year-old nephew fit well once the seat was reclined and the footrest was pulled out. This did, however, require that the base be installed in a car with a roomy back seat (such as a wagon or SUV), rather than a smaller sedan-type vehicle. There are color-coded reclining demarcations on the side of the base, which help determine the best position for the passenger. As for the installation of the base, it does have the ability to be installed with or without the LATCH option. Our vehicles do offer this capability and installing the base was made simple with the LATCH clips. The harness itself is adjustable for various shoulder heights, and is done so easily.
Overall the Graco Click Connect 40 has worked extremely well for our needs. We also feel good knowing that as our baby grows, the seat will easily grow with her. The price point of the seat is extremely reasonable given the fact that the seat has the ability to be used to the full 2-year age requirement for rear-facing infant seats. And with its side impact safety rating, we would have to conclude that the Click Connect has upheld Graco’s impressive reputation.
