The American Pregnancy Association reports that somewhere between 50 and 70 percent of women complain of back pain during pregnancy. For many, this pain goes away after delivery but it can return or be exacerbated once a new mom begins carrying or lifting the infant. It’s important that new moms and dads not only learn about how to prevent back injuries by using proper lifting techniques but also which parent-centered products will help prevent daily stress and strain on the back.
In order to curb this problem, pay special attention to how you’re picking things up. Remember the old saying, “Lift with your legs, not your back”?
Try squatting down to pick up your child or that heavy basket of laundry rather than bending at the waist. Also, consider purchasing baby items that are a nice “fit” for your size and strength. If you’re tall, look for bigger strollers and taller changing tables so that you don’t have to spend so much time hunched over. You should also try out different diaper bags, baby carriers and slings to see which ones are the most comfortable for you and your body.
