Can I get laser eye surgery during pregnancy?

During pregnancy you are likely already spending a little more time resting at home than usual—perfect timing to recover from laser eye surgery, right? Think again.

Though it may be tempting to rejuvenate your vision right before the baby arrives (hey, you’ll want to be able to see those little fingers and toes clearly, right?), ophthalmologists agree that pregnancy is not the time to go under the laser. Apart from the small chance that radiation from the laser could harm your baby, your prescription will probably be a little off during those magical 40 weeks. Many women become more nearsighted or farsighted than usual due to swelling that occurs in the lens of the eye while pregnant.

Additionally, the eye doctor will need to put drops in your eyes and may even give you a light sedative for the surgery—both of which are no-nos while expecting. In short, it is best to wait until after the baby is born to obtain 20/20 vision.
