Looking for the perfect chair for all that late night rockin’? Here’s how to buy the chair that’s right for you, along with the ones we’d be willing to splurge for ourselves.

What type of chair do you prefer?
Do you want a traditional rocker, a glider or a big comfy chair with a footrest that you can curl up and nurse in? A nursery chair typically gets a lot of action, so make sure that you try out a few and know which type you prefer before making a big purchase.

If you like to prop your feet up, look for a chair with a footrest. A wooden stool or a pretty little ottoman can also work beautifully.

How does it look?
Obviously the first thing you’ll notice is what the chair looks like. Many chairs can be transferred to the living room after the baby days and fit right in—others obviously belong in a nursery. Think about what you’d like to do with your chair when it’s no longer needed in the nursery and buy accordingly. Also consider whether or not you plan to have more children—that pink is gorgeous when you know a girl’s on the way, but if you have a boy in two years, you’ll probably be less thrilled with your color choice.

Some chairs have a pillow option. Don't forget to take into account personal preference and the position of the pillow in relation to the body (if it's too high or low, it will be uncomfortable).

Is it comfortable?
Some people like to sink into their chairs and others prefer a firmer seat—since it’s all a matter of opinion, think about which you prefer and try out a few chairs that fit your comfort description. [tip:] You don’t want it too squishy, because if you have to struggle to get out of the chair it might wake the baby sleeping in your arms).

If you opt for a wooden chair, choose one with padded arms for comfort. Your elbows will thank you during the 2 a.m. feedings.

Can it withstand the test of time?
If the model in the store is already shabby and squeaking, it’s probably not your best choice. Yes, those chairs get a lot of play, but so will the one in your nursery. Spend a little more for a chair that will last through more than one baby.

Since it's bound to get a little messy, find a chair with material that's easy to wipe clean.
