Admit it: The thought of donning a bra with weird hooks and bizarre openings that provide easy access to your girls is scary. And the thought of shopping for one of these crazed contraptions in public? Downright terrifying. But before nightmares of the bra brigade interrupt your rare and precious sleep, let us introduce you to some of the more friendly, pretty nursing bras on the market and share a few words of wisdom to help you find your perfect match.
Expert Advice
Nursing bra experts Meryl Kutzin and Laura Marchant of La Leche League International suggest fit, function, comfort and fashion to be the most important aspects of a nursing bra.
Fit. Typically, you’ll need to go up one cup size and one band size; however, have a professional fitting and try on plenty of sizes and styles to ensure you find the best bra for you.
Function. Try opening and closing each bra you try on. You’ll want to be sure you can easily unfasten and re-fasten the bra with one hand, since you’ll need to do so regularly for feedings.
Comfort. Obviously, comfort is key. We don’t recommend buying anything that pokes, itches or rubs you the wrong way.
Fashion. Sure, your body and lifestyle are changing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be your stylish self. Choose a few practical everyday bras, as well as one or two varieties that make you feel pretty and confident.
