It’s official: If baby boy doesn’t arrive earlier, we’ll be meeting him on July 29! Induction day is scheduled for a few days before my due date.

My doctor is very serious about staying within one week of my due date—I would have pushed for a few days earlier, but c’est la vie. It’s not that I don’t want my baby to be full-term; I just know that every day closer to August 2 means I have a greater chance of delivering a 9-pound plus baby.

As we were scheduling, my doctor introduced a procedure I was totally unfamiliar with. She said if I wasn’t dilated they would have me come in the night before for Cervidil, a vaginal insert which would soften my cervix and prepare me for the Pitocin in the morning. (I would have to spend that night in the hospital.) After looking it up online, it sounds like Cervidil is a natural hormone that isn’t too risky; but still, I’m hoping my cervix will ripen on its own. I had previously thought that if I wasn’t dilated, I would just put off the induction—it makes me a little nervous to force the process!

I'm starting to realize how much I still have to do before July 29 rolls around. I'm not only getting ready for baby to arrive, but also preparing his big sister and checking procrastinated items off my list- hair and dental appointments are in order, as is an oil change- as I realize I'll have no chance of getting out for these necessary engagements when I have a brand-new baby. I'm also working until the week before baby day, so I won't have much time to worry about the impending delivery!

Didn't have to be induced

By friedmli
Didn't have to be induced after all... My son was due on June 27 but at a routine dr visit on June 14, I had a high blood pressure reading and they sent me to the hospital. My fluid levels and the baby's activity on the non-stress test were normal, but my liver enzymes were high, so the dr on call said I would have to be induced. Since I was only 1.5 cm dialated, that would mean Cervidil and then Pitocin in the morning -- just as you described above. My husband and I convinced the dr to let us go home and get our (not packed) hospital bags, as this was our first child and we live about a 10-minute cab ride from the hospital. On the way home, my water broke. By the time we got back to the hospital, I was 2-3 cm dialated and they decided to let me progress on my own. Twelve hours after my water broke, my son arrived, two weeks ahead of schedule. He was 7 lbs, 20 inches and aside from some issues with bilirubin because he and I have different blood types, he's fine. I'm hoping your induction will turn into a non-induction, just like mine did!

Wow, your Facebook fans are

Wow, your Facebook fans are getting a little ferocious. The debate seems to be continuing at: http://www.facebook.com/pnmag Meanwhile, I looked up our scheduled birth date and here’s what I found: July 29th is significant because it is the day Sir Robert Baden Powell started the modern Scouting movement, Prince Charles and Di were married, and NASA was established. Also it is the day that Bruce R. McConkie and Dag Hammarskjold were born. Also Peter Jennings, Wil Wheaton, and Mussolini. That last one is not great…
