highchairWhile it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you must have everything bought, built and sterilized before you even go into labor, that’s actually not the case. There are certain items your little one won’t be ready for right away—or even for several months. In case you’d prefer to pace your purchases, here’s the typical timeline for non-newborn essentials:

3-6 months: Crib

4-6 months: Highchair

5-7 months: Activity center, jumper or walker

7-10 months: Safety gates and childproofing supplies

9-12 months: Convertible car seat

What should you have before you head to the hospital? A car seat, diapers, clothing and bottles (depending on your feeding preferences) and a crib, bassinet or co-sleeping device.
