ShowerinBoxphotoWEBHaving a deployed husband can turn a pregnant wife’s glow into worry. Operation Shower helps these military moms cope by throwing them baby showers and sending gifts, also known as Showers in a Box.
Showers in a Box contain enough gifts to show moms and their babies-to-be they’re being thought of even if they can’t make it to one of Operation Shower’s signature baby showers. All the gifts in the boxes are donated by companies, such as baby-bedding provider Carousel Designs.
“For military wives who are expecting a baby and whose spouses are deployed or soon to be deployed, the impending arrival of a child can be both exciting and stressful,” says founder of Operation Shower LeAnn Morrissey. “Operation Shower was created specifically to honor these courageous military moms for all they do at home that enables their spouses to proudly serve our country and defend our freedom. We want them to know how much they are loved and appreciated, and provide them with an opportunity to celebrate this special milestone together.”
sibphotoMorrissey began the program with a suggestion from her uncle to send cards to military wives.  She took it a step farther by sending care packages, and the overwhelming support she received paved the way for her to throw a single baby shower for 30-40 expecting moms at a time.  Since then, Operation Shower has provided group showers for over 1,300 women.
Operation Shower has been throwing showers for these moms since its launch in 2007, but sending Showers in a Box is a more recent development. Since not all women can make it to their thoughtfully provided shower, Operation Shower conceived the idea to send them the gifts they would have received there. If moms are able to attend, they receive their Showers in a Box at the actual shower.
Since the military outreach initiative Birdies for the Brave is PGA Tour supported and helps with the majority of showers, many of them, including the next two scheduled for this summer, are held during golf tournaments in Connecticut and New Jersey.
Although the company is based in Missouri, it throws baby showers as well as sends Showers in a Box to expecting military mothers throughout the U.S. to assure them that they are being thought of and their sacrifices are admired and not forgotten.
