We all know sleep isn’t easy to come by during pregnancy (or after for that matter), so any help we can get is usually appreciated.
Instead of heading to Costco to buy a super-sized pack of pillows to stick in front of, behind, and in between every part of my uncomfortable body, I opted to give the UK renowned dreamgenii pregnancy support and breastfeeding pillow a try.
I was hesitant at first, as some body pillows I’ve had in the past seem to take up the same amount of space as another person—and with my already growing belly, there’s just not any more room for another “extra person.” While the dreamgenii is a substantial pillow, its not excessively oversized or overstuffed. It’s proportioned just right to provide support where you need it and to encourage safe sleep positioning too. I used it to lie on my left side (allowing optimal blood flow and nutrients to my baby), which proved to be very comfortable. The curved body-pillow-esque portion of the pillow supports my belly and slides down between my legs for a more comfortable slumber. There’s also a small pillow attachment that rests behind me, preventing me from rolling to my back in the middle of the night (which is my typical routine). I like that one pillow offers all the help I need; and because everything is connected, my support system stays in place throughout the night, even if I wiggle a little in my sleep.
dreamgenii also suggests their pillow can “encourage your baby to adopt the optimal birth position which can mean a shorter and less painful labor.” Now I’m not 100 percent convinced that I will be popping out a baby pain-free thanks to a feather-filled piece of fabric, but if there’s a chance this pregnancy pillow might make pushing a 7-pound bundle of joy out my hoo-ha more bearable, I’m willing to give it a go.
The dreamgenii is also recommended for use as breastfeeding support postpartum (I think they must realize that all bets are off for a good night’s sleep once baby debuts, regardless of whether or not you have cool pillow to curl up with), so I’ll look forward to checking that aspect out in a few months.
