The Britax Chaperone is a rear-facing car seat for newborns ranging from 4 pounds to 30 pounds and up to 32 inches. It is sturdy and built with the high quality I have come to expect and appreciate from Britax.
Britax ChaperoneThe seat is full of innovative safety and convenience features, making it stand out among its peers (even when not clad in Britax’s signature cow print—although ours is, and I love it). The first feature I noticed was the Anti-Rebound Bar, which looks like an oversized handle on the car seat’s base. The bar stabilizes the seat by minimizing rotational forces in a front or rear collision. In the event of a side collision, the seat features True Side Impact Protection to keep the baby’s head, neck and spine aligned to limit injury. While testing these features didn’t seem prudent, I am comforted in knowing they are there. In addition, despite weighing less than 7 pounds when we brought him home from the hospital, my son seemed very snug and secure riding in the Chaperone.
Part of that security came from a properly adjusted harness. The Chaperone makes it easy to ensure that the child’s harness fits properly with the Quick-Adjust No Rethread Harness. In my opinion, this is one of the best features ever invented on a car seat. Babies grow up so fast and rethreading the harness seems to occur on a monthly basis—usually when you’re 15 minutes late and it’s raining. Other convenient features include the base’s easy push button LATCH connectors, the height adjustment knob and easy-to-read level indicators. There is also an extra large canopy that nearly shields the entire seat, a comfortable handle, easy in and out base and compatibility with most Britax strollers for use as a travel system.
I will say that the ample features of the Chaperone seem to have bloated the size of the car seat. I would recommend this seat to anyone … with a minivan (or other roomy vehicle). The seat is simply too large for a passenger car that regularly has a front seat passenger who’s taller than 5 feet, 6 inches. Other than the size, which is only an issue for small-car families, the seat is perfect. Easy to use, easy to clean adnd stylish but not over the top. It’s not an inexpensive investment, but at around $230, it reasonably priced for the abundance of safe and handy features provided.
