Utah has hit the mid-90s this week! I tend to swell in the heat even when I’m not pregnant (poor circulation, I guess?), so at least now I have an excuse for exhibiting cankles and sausage fingers whenever I get hot. I haven’t been able to wear my size 4.5 wedding ring for quite some time now; instead, I have a couple of cheap little bands on my finger. (This is just a courtesy to my husband—it’s not like I need a ring to thwart unwanted advances, what with my giant midsection and my three ducklings around me.)
When I went to my OB appointment on Wednesday, he advised me to stay out of the sun. OK… the thing is, I have three kids who are now out of school for the summer and looking for things to do. Finn has baseball three times a week, and the kids are always asking to go to the pool or splash pad. I can’t really avoid going out in the heat.
On the upside, Utah summers are wonderful because, as hot as it gets, as soon as you step into the shade it feels comfortable again. They are nothing like Georgia summers, where the heat is amplified by humidity—you’re not going to feel any relief unless you’re in the water or inside with AC. The dry heat here means less sweat, too, especially when there’s a decent breeze.
For additional relief, I drink a lot of ice water, plus the occasional La Croix or other. Yesterday I tried the new watermelon mint lemonade from Chick-fil-A. I didn’t mind it, I tell you! Very refreshing.
Inside, I have the AC cranked. My husband and I got into a legit fight a couple weeks ago when I saw that he’d turned on the heater after a day in the 70s. Not cool, literally. Since then, he’s let me reset the thermostat to the low 70s during the day and 69 at night (plus the ceiling fan, of course). Otherwise, I wake up sweaty and gross! I feel a little bad for freezing him out, but he seems to be handling it OK by using an extra blanket.
And dang, it feels good to get in the pool on a hot day! I just sit and soak while my kids play around. Instant weight reduction and temperature adjustment. I’m wearing my cute sister-in-law’s hand-me-down maternity swimsuit. It seemed enormous when I tried it on for Hawaii in February, but now it’s pretty close to fitting!
Two more weeks, give or take! I won’t be battling the heat much longer. When I woke up this morning with aching hips, it felt like baby couldn’t be far from arriving.
