So this is the new year

Well, Christmas came and went in the blink of an eye, and we are quite literally right around the corner from 2016. This time last year, I was just over nine weeks pregnant with Akira and was hardly showing at all. I was in the throes of morning sickness and food aversions and was doing my best to hide it all until it was “safe” enough to publicly announce my pregnancy. Anaïs was visiting the grandparents down in Florida, and Jesse and I rang in 2015 at a show and then went to an after-party hosted by friends of ours who live around the corner. Throughout that weekend, I was either in bed or running to the bathroom feeling nauseated and uncomfortable but I managed to get myself out on New Year’s Eve to celebrate.
This year has me in a different physical state with so much to celebrate. Anaïs is once again in Florida visiting the grandparents, and Jesse and I are enjoying this week and really focusing on Akira. It’s amazing how quiet the house is without a 3-year-old girl running circles around all of us! Don’t get me wrong. My daughter is still the light of my life and always will be. But I’m pretty sure anyone with more than one kid can attest that they are exhausting especially when there’s an infant around. But I digress.
-3I have so much to be thankful for. And as I look back on the year we had, I smile because I feel like this was the year that I feel like I really fell into the life I’d always dreamed I’d had. That’s not to say that it’s been easy or that the year didn’t have its ups and downs. What I mean is, 2015 was the year of growth. I feel like I grew as a person and as a mother. The needs of my family and my children have always been important and a priority but I also learned to put myself on my list of priorities. How else am I supposed to take care of others if I’m not taking care of myself first?
I feel like Jesse and I grew together as parents, too. We created a life together and brought him into this world the way we wanted to at home surrounded by his immediate and nuclear family. Anaïs grew out of being an only child to being a big sister, which was, let’s be honest, no small feat. And our family grew as a whole unit ready for anything and everything that we were about to embark on. We had some growing pains, restless and sleepless nights, a bout with colic, reconfiguring schedules, dividing time equally among the kids and remembering to make time for one another. All this growth and change brought us to the starting point of 2016, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what the following year will bring us. We are so ready. Happy New Year, everyone!
