    I'm so stereotypical

    Claussen pickle jar

Would anyone care to guess what I had for lunch today?

OK, I’ll tell you. No-sugar-added applesauce, a (light) tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat loaded with pickle slices, and for dessert, chocolate ice cream. Yes, I literally had pickles and ice cream for lunch. And I will probably return to the pickle jar before the day is done. I know those suckers are nothing more than salt bombs, but for some reason I can’t stay away. Oh wait, I know the reason: I’m pregnant.

Note: Have you ever wondered why pregnant women crave pickles and ice cream? I have too. In fact, I just Googled it to see if I could find an answer, but none of the returns were very reputable, and they didn’t have much to say anyway.

The dills and desserts aren’t doing much for my figure either. As I spent that one weekend barfing at the beginning of my pregnancy, I thought, “Here we go again. But at least I’ll lose some weight over the next two months.” No such luck. Don’t get me wrong, I was quite glad to realize that my sickness was only a passing stomach bug, I just wasn’t so glad that my appetite was raring to go from day one. Sure I’m eating for two, but one of us is the size of a bean, so all the extra eating isn’t entirely warranted.

On the other hand, I have to be grateful that I’ve had a relatively easy time of it in the diet department. My non-pregnancy diet doesn’t include alcohol, cigarettes, coffee or even much soda, so there was no adjustment there. I do occasionally eat sushi, but not often enough to really miss it, and if I get the craving, there are always California rolls. I did have to give up Advil in favor of Tylenol, but that hasn’t been a problem so far. (When I had severe headaches in my last pregnancy, my doc prescribed acetaminophen with codeine and that worked wonders, so I’m keeping that in my back pocket (but not literally!).)

I’m craving the same things I craved when I was pregnant with my daughter: lots of orange juice, pickles and sweet things. Time will tell if that means I’m having another girl or if I just like certain foods more than usual when I’m—wait for it—knocked up. Meanwhile, is it inappropriate to add Claussen dills to my baby registry?
