Our nursery is finally coming together – a source of excitement for any mama-to-be.
We have the basics from last time around:a white wooden crib, a changing table fashioned out of an old bookcase my grandfather made, and the old dresser from my childhood nursery newly painted in a fun shade of turquoise. A new addition—and something I’m really excited about—is an upholstered glider we ordered last week from a local furniture company.For Aaron, I used a rocking chair that was my grandmother’s.While it was special to have a sentimental piece of furniture in his room, the wooden rocker was not nearly as comfortable as today’s modern gliders.So this time we decided to splurge for an upgrade.
I started searching for more traditional wooden gliders, but wasn't crazy about how they looked.And I couldn’t bear spending money on a style that wouldn’t go with any other furniture in our home.Then I started looking at upholstered gliders.Wow, there are some beautiful ones out there, and certainly in styles that would work in a family room or den. But I couldn’t bring myself to spend a thousand dollars on a piece of furniture that will most likely be covered in spit-up within a few months.
So, after lots of research and a bit of shopping around, we ended up with the Hagen glider from Best Chairs.It seems to be the perfect mix of a sturdy, durable piece of furniture that will last for years, but not something that completely breaks the bank. (Our furniture store special-ordered it for $500 with free delivery – not too shabby!)
We chose a chocolate brown color with tan flecks – not the most nursery-friendly color, but definitely something that will be versatile in the long-run.The microfiber fabric wipes clean with a damp sponge for all of those little newborn accidents.
Now I’m on the hunt for some fun fabric to tie it all together.So far we’ve got tan walls, a brown glider and a turquoise dresser.I’d also like to introduce some yellow and maybe a splash of pink, but not too much.
So far, I’ve ordered this fun dandelion print to make curtains, but I still need to find a way to tie in the turquoise and brown—maybe a garland of fabric or felt balls.Any thoughts?More importantly, any sewing tips for a nesting mother-to-be who is certainly not a seamstress?
