So, my hubby got me a NEW camera. Which is so surprising, since 85% of the technology I buy either ends up in the toilet or lost. But this bad boy isn't going near any water. Unless it's the ocean, and I'll have a great lens and stand far away.
I took a photography class in college, but we used a 35mm and developed our own film. In the world of digital, I am completely lost. I've had point-and-shoots in the past, but never moved past the automatic setting. I'm looking to do that with this camera. I feel like I have a good eye for photography, and I've always leaned toward naturally lit, candid photography.
A wonderful and experienced photographer, Savanna Tate, took a few minutes to share with me her favorite digital shots she's taken, and told me why she loves them.
Although it may seem a little biased because she is my little girl, this first photo is definitely one of my favorite newborn pictures. The reason I love it is because the lighting is so subtle and beautiful! I am a huge believer in using all natural lighting, and I never use a flash. The lighting that comes through an open window can create some of the most beautiful highlights on a face.
This second photo is one of my all-time favorite photos. I love for family photos to tell a story and to show more than just smiles on faces. I love that you can see that the parents adore their daughter! I love the simple details, like the little girl's Curious George doll up in the tree behind the family. On top of the story though, I think that the colors are gorgeous! Fall is such a popular time for family photos, and in this photo, I think you can see why. I can see this photo enlarged to 16″X20″, beautifully framed and hanging above a fireplace!
The third photo is one of my favorite toddler photos. Once again, as with all photography, lighting is key and I absolutely love how the light is streaming in so soft from behind her. It not only softens the contrast, but the colors are so subtle! I also love the angle the photo is taken from. One of my favorite shots with toddlers is from above because that view of their eyes looking up is so real!
This photo is another one of my favorite family photos. What I love about this photo is the urban feel to it. I love the contrast that comes from black and white photos … the family against the brick I think is really beautiful!
This last photo is of two sisters who adored each other. What I love about this photo are the subtle ways that their friendship came through. I love that the younger sister's arm is draped over her older sister's leg. I love how the older sister is resting her head on her younger sister's, and lastly I love that although they look so much alike, their eyes are completely different and the cloudy overhead sky accentuates this even more!
Thanks Savanna! Hopefully she can inspire you to challenge yourself with your own photos. Please check out her photography website/blog, and look her up if you are lucky enough to live in Utah!
