    Beth Shea

Read the remainder of my interview with the amazing Beth Shea, founder and author of the popular blogPetite Planet.

What fostered your passion for green design?

Becoming a mother fostered my passion for green design. From the moment I got pregnant, I had an awakening that it is every individual’s responsibility to tread lightly on this planet so future generations may inherit a better tomorrow. I think green design should become the rule as opposed to the exception. The movement is currently in its pioneer stages, but generations from now, it will be the norm to recycle, upcycle, create from what is already in existence, and use sustainable methods of production. It is our responsibility to support individual artisans as well as big corporations who use eco-friendly and fair-trade practices to produce their goods. The hope is that eventually everything produced will be considered green design.

You run a successful green blog for parents and children. What brings you the greatest satisfaction as its author?

My biggest satisfaction is knowing that I am reaching parents with vital information that can help their families live better, healthier lives, while also caring for the planet at large. I hear from people who have made major shifts and changes for the better due to something they have read on Petite Planet, and helping even one person makes me feel fulfilled, like what I am doing is immensely worthwhile. I have also become a “go-to” person among my friends and family, as everyone asks me about safe, green, healthy alternatives for their kids, from shampoo to snacks! If I can help one person be a better parent, enable a child to live a more pure existence, and help save the planet one baby step at a time, that is an amazing honor.

You are also a freelance writer and consultant with an extensive resume. As a wife and mother of one with one more on the way, what is your advice on maintaining a healthy balance between motherhood, career and daily life?

Juggling all of these responsibilities is not easy! My advice on maintaining a healthy balance is to have your priorities straight and to have a plan regarding how to accomplish all of your daily goals while retaining your sanity! As it stands now, I have no “me time”; I am either being a mommy or I am working … but I love what I do in every facet of my life, and I know one day I will be able to curl up with a good book uninterrupted and I’ll wonder where all of that happy chaos went. I think your children should always be the main focus of your day because you’ll never look back on their childhood and wish you had worked more, and the time goes by so quickly that every moment needs to be savored. Knowing I am pouring my heart and soul into my child and that I have a job that inspires me makes me feel blessed … so when I get overwhelmed, I just recall my good fortune and take a deep breath.
