When my son Charlie was about 4 months old I decided to take the plunge into cloth diapering.
I had contemplated cloth diapers throughout my pregnancy and finally got up the guts to give it a try. I’m so glad that I did. Charlie is now 20 months old and we haven’t looked back. I absolutely love cloth diapers and prefer them to disposables!
So why choose cloth diapers over disposables? There is of course the obvious answer—they’re better for the environment. But I have to admit that my deep, hidden motivation is that they are just so darn cute. We aren’t talking about the same old diapers that our moms used. Modern cloth diapers are convenient, easy to use and cute!
It can be a bit overwhelming when you’re trying to get started. There are so many different types of diapers and diaper companies that it can be a little scary for a new mom. So I’ve broken down the main types of diapers for you and selected some of my favorite brands as a cheat-sheet to get you started.
There is a diaper out there for every mom and every baby so keep your options open. Choose several types and brands that you are interested in until you find what works best for you and your little one.
Pocket diapers are a great, convenient option for new moms. Each pocket diaper has a pocket that allows you to add a soaker pad. These diapers do not require a cover. Simply stuff the pocket and put it on your baby. Pocket diapers are nice because you can stuff them all in advance so you are always ready for the next diaper change. After the diaper is soiled simply remove the soaker and place the entire diaper in your diaper pail for washing.
One of my all-time favorite pocket diapers are the easy-to-use diapers by Happy Heinys. Their new one-size diaper is totally adjustable and perfect for little ones from 8 to 35lbs. They come in loads of cute prints and are a favorite among celebrities. I’ve been using this cute owl print on Charlie and I absolutely adore it. It fits him perfectly at 22lbs with room to grow and washes well. A great option if you’re considering pocket diapers! An AIO diaper is exactly what it sounds like. It is a diaper that functions on its own without the addition of soaker pads or covers. It functions like a disposable diaper—simply toss it in the diaper pail when it is soiled and wash later.
One of the most popular brands of AIO diapers are the easy to use diapers by bumGenius. These fantastic diapers are made of an outer fabric that is safe to wash in hot water and features a hook & loop closure, just like disposables. They come in sizes XS through L to fit babies from 6 to 30 lbs.
One of my favorite types of cloth diapers are AI2 diapers. AI2 diapers are a great, eco-nomical way to try cloth diapering because each cover can be used multiple times before washing. Simply add a soaker pad to your diaper, most of which snap in, and you’re ready to go. I usually start out the day with two AI2 diapers so that they can air out in between changes. At the end of the day, or if a diaper becomes soiled, I put the diaper in the diaper pail to wash and start with a new AI2.
I recently got to try the amazing line of diapers by Soft Bums. Soft Bums makes several wonderful AI2 options. The thing I love about Soft Bums is that the inside lining of the diaper is a soft, comfy fabric. They make several different highly absorbent soaker Pods, including an organic option. These diapers fit Charlie beautifully—in fact, they fit all babies beautifully because of their unique, hidden Slide
