What can I do to limit my exposure to wireless device radiation during pregnancy?
There are five easy, inexpensive steps you can take to reduce your exposure to wireless radiation:
1. Put your electronic device in a case that reduces radiation exposure. I like Pong cases because they’ve been tested in labs certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and reduce radiation exposure by up to 95 percent below the FCC limit.
2. Keep your phone or tablet on “airplane mode” as much as possible. Switching off the Wi-Fi and 3G transmitters reduces radiation exposure but still allows access to music, movies, apps and games.
3. Put your tablet in a stand instead of on your lap, especially when using it for long periods of time (i.e., when you’re watching a movie).
4. Read the fine print. Most people don’t know that cellphone and tablet makers are required to include warnings and guidelines so users won’t be exposed to more radiation than is considered legally safe. For example, Apple recommends keeping the iPhone more than half an inch from your head and body and the iPad away from the body since exposure level drops off dramatically with distance. Also, know where the antenna is located and keep it facing away from your body.
5. Power down your devices every night before bed, and never sleep with a cellphone or tablet under your pillow or near your head or belly.
